The shepherd of hermas summary3/19/2023 ![]() This accounts in part for its great popularity in the ancient church. It is the oldest Christian allegory, an apocalyptic book, a sort of didactic religious romance. It is distinguished from all the productions of the apostolic fathers by its literary form. 280 has its title from the circumstance that the author calls himself Hermas and is instructed by the angel of repentance in the costume of a shepherd.
